THE BIG READ: DO YOU KNOW YOUR TAXI DRIVER?

Unknown | Tuesday, June 24, 2014 |
Have you always wanted to know where some of the cab drivers you see in town are from? If yes, then you are at the right place. We just cracked some codes that will give you some clues as to where the cab drivers are from.
Continue after the cut...
TAXI DRIVERS OF KWARA/OYO DESCENT
Cab drivers from these two states are very easily identifiable. Majority of them have very thick and deep tribal marks on their cheeks. They are very fond of spotting white orange-like caps on top of their heads. These men do not play with their lace material.
Majority of them are elderly and are happy when you keep referring to them as baba. Be ready to enjoy a handful of Ebenezer Obey’s tracks on the trip.
TAXI DRIVERS OF EDO DESCENT
I love these men. They are very smart driver. Their sense of humour is second to none. When you are negotiating with them especially if you are a lady, check out where their eyes are fixed. Yes, their eyes are usually fixed on the mid region of ladies while negotiations are on. If they like what they see, then, that’s an added advantage to you because you are likely to get massive discount.
TAXI DRIVERS OF IGBO DESCENT
“Nwanne or Nne where are you going to” is their signature way of striking up a conversation with potential passengers. While you are busy explaining your intended destination, an Igbo cab driver is busy making a mental calculation of your worth by looking at how you are dressed. Your perceived worth will play a significant role in the amount you will be ‘charged’.
TAXI DRIVERS OF LAGOS DESCENT
This group of drivers can easily be confused with Oyo/Kwara cab drivers. In fact, it is extremely difficult to differentiate them. But one outstanding difference is that they are usually without the tribal marks. Cab drivers of Lagos descent love white singlet which they usually wear while they wait at the parks for customers. It is likely you will spot a Lagos insignia somewhere inside his cab. I hear most of them are from Ikorodu, Bariga and Lagos Island
TAXI DRIVERS OF CALABAR DESCENT
These are about the neatest cab drivers in Lagos. They wear more of cotton shirts or t-shirts. They tend to listen more during negotiations and will only cut in to mention their best offer. Once the right fare is agreed upon and the cab fully in motion, a Calabar cab driver will strike up a conversation with you. You are likely to be told how he worked his way to having a cab in Lagos.
That is how to know your taxi drivers in a nutshell.
