A 32- year- old man who absconded for not being able to pay the mortuary charges for the corpse of his late wife, in a mortuary home, has been forced to convey the corpse on his head to his village in Akwa Ibom.
The man was said to have deposited and abandoned his late wife’s corpse in a mortuary along Nung Efa street, off Olu Obasanjo way in Uyo, and disappeared without trace for over three years because he could not pay the morgue fee.
Luck, however, ran out on him as he was spotted by one of the mortuary attendants on the street of Uyo who asked him why he chose to abandon his late wife in the morgue and pleaded with him to come and remove it promising that he would no longer be charged additional money.
But the man, according to an eyewitness, instead of acceding to the attendant’s request, said that he would come back the following day to remove the corpse as he was not prepared for such task.
The attendant, however, refused to let him go for fear that the man may yet disappear again, since he gave fake address while depositing the dead body with them.
According to the eyewitness, the man, on realizing that the attendant stood her ground and would not allow him go, kicked the attendant and immediately took to his heels but was later apprehended by irate crowed who brought him back.
The crowed, thereafter, followed him and the attendant to the mortuary where he picked up the wife’s corpse and carried it on his head as there was no taxi around that was ready to help him.
However, a Keke Napep operator, who saw the dead body lying on the ground and nobody was willing to assist, out of pity later offered to help him to his village.
