The Big Read: WHY?

Unknown | Sunday, June 22, 2014 |

Don’t hold my mouth. Don’t tie my mouth. I have to say this or should I say, I have to ask this? Why? Why? Pardon me to ask again, why?

I know you want me to say it or ask it or discuss it. I know. And that is exactly what I’m planning to do. Right now! Except that I needed to do what I’m doing now to get me into the right frame of mind before I ask this question I’m about ask. So permit me to beat about the bush a bit, hoping that by the time I’m done wondering or beating about the bush, I would have assumed the right frame of mind to ask this question. At the end of this piece, you will find out why i was trying to catch my breath before getting down to what I want to say to you.

Clears throat. Blows out air from my throat. Adjusts on my seat. Looking more intensely into my system as I type these words.

Let me give you a background to the question I want to ask. No, this is not a background. It is the story.

As I walked into the church today, an Usher beckoned on me to come towards her way. She signalled to show there was one vacant seat in front. I like sitting on the front row. So I gladly followed her to the front seat. “There!” she pointed. “Thank you” I said as I walked past her to take up the seat she pointed at.

I have barely sat down when reality hit me. It hit me really hard. “I have entered one chance.” ”One chance in the church?” You may want to ask? Yes, but not the kind of “one chance” you are thinking about. This is a different kind of “one chance.”

The moment I sat down, the first stench that hit me in the face is better experienced than described. That was not the anointing I came to church for, neither was it the baptism in fire I so desired. My church service ended before it started. I couldn’t concentrate. I’m not sure I made any sense in the notes I scribbled down during the day’s sermon.

I kept looking for another vacant seat to go to. I would have left immediately if I was sitting at the back. The front seat is the wrong place to seat in times like this. It is usually a long walk to the back. That kind of long walk is not for the faint-hearted. And when you dare to walk all the way to the back, the number of eyeballs that would hit your body would nearly melt it if you do not have a tough skin. I do not have a tough skin, so I decided to sit out the torture.

I took my time to look at this young man hoping my strong stare would send the strongest possible signal to him about the health hazard he’s carrying about. For where? He didn’t understand the stare. Instead, he obeyed all the instructions from the pulpit with extra zest. “Tell your neighbour, be of good cheer” the ‘man of God’ instructed. The guy turned to me and said “be of good cheer.” “Really” I answered. No, I didn’t say that to him. I said it in mind. “Be of good cheers with that stench coming out from mouth?” I queried nobody in particular. .

“Why didn’t you look the other way” I might hear you ask. I did. The right hand side was not better either. I had BO to live with on my right hand side. Did I hear you ask “what is BO?” Don’t worry, you are not alone. I also asked the same question when I first came across the abbreviation. BO is body odour.

The moment “the Grace” was finally said, I ran straight to the toilet. I will save you the details of what I had gone to do. I felt a lot relieved when I came out of the toilet.

So to the question, why do some people especially guys, find it difficult to take care of their oral health and how they smell in public? Guys don’t be offended I’m picking on you, just that I have had many of such experiences with the guys. Or are there some ladies who carry such anointing about?

What is so difficult in taking your time to brush your mouth and clean yourself up especially when you know you carry extra anointing Why? Why? Why?
