Crime rate is very low in Abuja - Commissioner
ABUJA  Wilson Inalegwu, the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, has said the city has the lowest crime rate in the country.

Inalegwu insisted that no security agency could achieve reasonable success in its operations without having a buy-in from the civil populace.

He, therefore, advised residents of the capital city to be vigilant and report suspicious persons to the police.

Mr. Inalegwu said the low crime rate in the Nigerian capital resulted from the cooperation his command has been receiving from the civil population and sister agencies.

Particularly, he said highway robberies, car snatching, pick-pocketing and flash robberies popularly called “one chance,” have been on a steady decline across the city.

The police commissioner commended residents of the capital city and sister security agencies for the strong collaboration which has improved the Intelligence gathering, crime prevention and crime fighting.

He lauded the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase, for strengthening the community policing and introducing the safe highway initiative.

Mr. Inalegwu maintained that the sage highway programme of the IGP and the dedication of personnel have paid off with highly reduced incidents of highway robberies within the FCT and its environs.

“The rate of highway robberies, car snatching, pick-pocketing and robberies using commercial vehicles known as “one chance” has drastically reduced all over the capital city,” Mr. Inalegwu said.

“We were able to drive down the crime rate because of the strong cooperation we have been having especially with the residents of the capital city and our sister security agencies.”

“The Safe Highway initiative of the IGP and the consolidation of community policing have made the impressive records we now possible have but we are not resting on our oasis until we keep Abuja and its environs safe and secure.”
