A sneaky web guru has decided to deal harshly on Kanye West as he directs the weird domain name 'Loser.com' to Kanye's Wikipedia page.

The news of his new album So Help me God seems to have been rather overshadowed by an internet prankster and the loser.com website address.

In what appears to be revenge for his Grammys stunt the other week – storming the stage as Beck collecting his award for best album – some unknown joker has redirected the loser.com domain to the rapper’s Wikipedia page.

But seriously folks, as amusing as this whole thing is, buying a domain name to wind up a celebrity won’t come cheap.

In fact, as web experts Netristrar Ltd explain, while the loser.com domain name was originally sold in 1995, buying it today would leave any potential owner seriously out of pocket.

‘I would imagine loser.com would make the top 10 sales if sold today, probably for around $500,000 (around £325,000),’ a company spokesman explained.

‘It might even make 7 figures if bought by a big brand.’

As to who actually does own loser.com – and might have used it to get their own back on Kanye – that may well remain a mystery, since the person in question has opted to remain private on the website whois.com (which shows you who owns which domain names).

But while actually diverting a particular name to a different site (a la theloser.com/Kanye incident) might not be that difficult, with many domain registrars offering it to customers for free, Netistrar do exercise a note of caution.

‘There are legal issues to consider,’ their spokesman points out. ‘If you’re redirecting to another person’s site it’s not just the technical issues you need to think about.

‘There may also be potential legal problems for example passing off or defamation to consider.’

In other words folks, you may be better off not trying this one at home…
