It is over for the 7th Senate as they hold a valedictory session on Thursday, June 4, 2015 as part of activities to round up its tenure. The senate had passed a total of 123 bills during its tenure, including the 46 bills passed on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, which lasted from 2011 to 2015.
The senators had chosen to defer the discussion of the amendment of the constitution till another day before the commencement of the valedictory session not minding the fact that their tenure ends with the valedictory session.
Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba in his valedictory speech to the house revealed that a total of 115 motions were considered and approved with concomitant resolutions within the 4 year tenure of the house.
He said, “despite the penchant of the executive not to comply with National Assembly resolutions, they nevertheless served as a moral compass of putting the executive in check.”
He also said that Constitution review was most paramount on the agenda of the 7th Senate as a responsive legislature so as to identify loopholes in the constitution, meet yearning of the citizens by giving them a sense of ownership of the grund norm, strengthen the democracy of the nation and ensure the continued unified existence of the country.
“However, as much as we tried to bequeath an acceptable constitution, we found ourselves in a legal quagmire induced by the executive, the entire process, efforts and resources needlessly dissipate,” he concluded.
