Manchester United's breakthrough in their pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger could mean they end their interest in signing Morgan Schneiderlin.

The report which is refereed to as Good News to Man U fans broke on Friday night that United had struck a deal with Bayern over the transfer of the German World Cup winner - offering a fee of around £5.75m - though Bild, the publication that initially broke the story, confidently claims that a €20m fee has been agreed.

Schweinsteiger is set to sign a three-year contract worth £7.2m a year, though no official confirmation over the deal has come from either club yet.

The progress on that front has brought up doubts over their pursuit of Schneiderlin. It was reported last week that United were closing in on the player after returning with a better offer than the £20m one Southampton initially rejected, but all signs point to the fact that Schweinsteiger was Louis van Gaal's primary target.

United could end their interest in Schneiderlin to pursue other targets in other positions instead. Van Gaal was believed to only be targeting one central midfielder this summer and interchange them with the experienced Michael Carrick, but with the likes of Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney all able to play in the role too, it suggests there may not be room for the Frenchman too.

The club are struggling to keep hold of David de Gea, but they may now have a new concern in the goalkeeping department after it emerged Victor Valdes was in talks to leave the club.

Eurosport claim that Valdes is discussing the possibility of moving to Turkish club Antalyaspor, to link up with former Barcelona team mates Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o.
