Cameroonian military have reportedly killed at least 40 Boko Haram insurgents trying to storm the strategic border point between the two countries.
According to AFP, the heavily armed sect militants “attempted to cross the bridge at Fotokol” Tuesday, following which Nigeria’s neighbours opened fire on the insurgents.
Officials of the Cameroonian Ministry of Defence told the country’s radio station:
“Cameroon defence forces energetically reacted to this assault which lasted three hours.”
Last month it reported that Gamboru Ngala located on the border with Cameroon had been captured by Boko Haram fighters, which forced scores of its residents out of their homes to the infamous Fotokol. Refugees later narrated to journalists how militants were killing people “like chicken” in the seized town and declared that the territory was under Islamic Caliphate.
It will be recalled that the dreaded sect has recently employed a new scheme of terrorizing Nigerians. In a video obtained more than a week ago Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claimed caliphate in the captured Gwoza.
Meanwhile about 480 of Nigerian soldiers were said to have fled to Cameroon in the heavy close-to-border fight with the sect militants. Following the incident the Nigerian soldiers were accused of cowardice. However, reacting to the situation, the military officials claimed that the relocation was part of the planned “tactical manoeuvre”.
